Toilet and Potty Training Guidance for Children (0–5 years)
At Hailes Barn Day Nursery, we support children and families through toilet and potty training in a gentle, positive and child-led way. We follow NHS and early years guidance and work in close partnership with parents and carers to ensure consistency between home and nursery.
Every child develops at their own pace, and we aim to make this stage a calm and encouraging experience.
When to Start Toilet or Potty Training
Most children show signs of readiness between 18 months and 3 years, but some may be earlier or later. Starting when your child is ready helps make the process smoother.
Signs your child may be ready include:
Staying dry for longer periods
Showing awareness of wet or dirty nappies
Showing interest in the toilet or potty
Being able to pull trousers up and down
Telling you when they need to go (or just after)
Following simple instructions
If you are unsure, your Health Visitor can offer guidance.
Tips for Successful Toilet and Potty Training
Be patient, calm and positive
Use praise and encouragement for effort, not just success
Establish a regular routine (for example after meals or before sleep)
Dress your child in easy-to-remove clothing
Expect accidents — they are a normal part of learning
Avoid pressure, punishment or comparison with others
Encourage handwashing after every toilet visit
Consistency between home and nursery helps children feel confident and secure.
Night-Time Training
Night dryness usually develops later than daytime control. Many children continue to need nappies or pull-ups at night for some time.
Helpful tips:
Limit drinks right before bedtime (while ensuring your child stays well hydrated during the day)
Encourage toilet use before sleep
Use waterproof mattress protection if needed
Stay calm and reassuring if accidents happen
If your child continues to wet the bed regularly after age 5, you may wish to seek advice from your GP or Health Visitor.
