Safe Sleep Guidance for Babies and Young Children (0–5 years)

At Hailes Barn Day Nursery, your child’s safety and wellbeing is our highest priority. We follow national safe-sleep guidance and work in partnership with parents and carers to promote safe, comfortable and healthy sleep for babies and young children.

Below is key information based on NHS and national safe sleep recommendations.

Safe Sleep for Babies (0–12 months)

Following safer sleep advice for every sleep — day and night — significantly reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The ABC of Safe Sleep

  • A – Alone: Baby should sleep in their own clear sleep space (cot or Moses basket).

  • B – Back: Always place baby on their back to sleep.

  • C – Clear cot: Keep cot free from toys, pillows, bumpers and loose bedding.

Important Safety Points

  • Place baby on their back for every sleep

  • The safest place to sleep for the first 6 months is in a cot in the same room as you

  • Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet.

  • Keep baby’s head uncovered and avoid overheating

  • Keep the sleeping area clear of soft items and loose bedding

  • Never sleep with baby on a sofa or armchair

  • Maintain a smoke-free environment around your baby.

Safe Sleep for Toddlers and Children (1–5 years)

As children grow, sleep safety continues to be important.

  • The safest place to sleep is in a cot or appropriate bed with sides up (where needed)

  • Maintain a clear and safe sleep space, especially for younger toddlers.

  • Use a firm mattress and suitable bedding.

  • Keep room temperature comfortable (around 16–20°C).

  • Maintain a consistent bedtime routine to support healthy sleep habits.

  • Ensure a smoke-free environment for all children.

As children become older, comfort items (such as soft toys) may be introduced safely, but sleep areas should always remain safe and appropriate for the child’s age and development.
