Car Seat Safety Guidance for Babies and Young Children (0–5 years)
At Hailes Barn Day Nursery, your child’s safety is our highest priority. Safe and correct use of car seats greatly reduces the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision. We follow UK road safety and child passenger safety guidance and encourage all parents and carers to do the same.
The Law in the UK
By law:
Children must use a car seat until they are 12 years old or 135cm tall (whichever comes first)
The car seat must be suitable for your child’s height and weight
It must be fitted correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Children must travel in the rear seats where possible, especially when younger
Full guidance is available on the UK Government website (link below).
Choosing the Right Car Seat
Car seats are based mainly on your child’s height and/or weight.
Types of Car Seats
Rear-facing infant seats (birth to approx. 15 months+) – safest option for babies
Rear-facing toddler seats – recommended for as long as possible
Forward-facing seats (usually from 15 months+)
High-back booster seats (for older children)
Experts recommend keeping your child rear-facing for as long as possible, as this provides the best protection for the head, neck and spine.
Fitting and Using a Car Seat Safely
Always follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions
Ensure the seat is securely fitted (using ISOFIX or seatbelt correctly)
Harness straps should be snug, flat and not twisted
The chest clip (if present) should be at armpit level
Avoid bulky coats or padding under the harness
Never use a car seat that has been in a collision
Check regularly that the seat still fits your child correctly
If you are unsure, many retailers and safety organisations offer car seat fitting checks.
Important Safety Advice
Babies and young children should never be left unattended in a car
Avoid long periods in car seats outside of travel time (especially for babies)
Always ensure the seat is appropriate for your child’s size and development
Use rear seats where possible and never use a rear-facing seat with an active front airbag
Check car seats regularly for wear, damage or expiry dates
